Jungle City Bashment – Sunday 21st Dec at Howler

Experience a night that pays homage to Jamaican Dancehall dance, music and culture in all its glory, and celebrates Melbourne’s own dancers and artists who embrace it. From conscious Reggae to the ‘slackness’ of hard core Dancehall! This show explores every aspect of this uplifting yet controversial genre and culture that began on the streets on Jamaica and has spread all over the globe.

Melbourne’s Dancehall Scene: Melbourne, like many cities around Europe, Asia and the USA is home to a small yet ever growing local Dancehall culture. As much as it aspires to emulate Jamaican Dancehall, the Melbourne scene has naturally developed a distinct style that reflects our local cultural and social diversity. It gives those on the fringes, who don’t conform or fit within mainstream culture and trends, a place to find identity and belong as a unique individual while being part of a creative community. Melbourne Dancehall attracts a largely female audience and gives women of all shapes and sizes a space where they can feel sexy and confident in their own skin. The Jungle City Bashment night is produced by Jungle City projects – a business solely dedicated to the growth of Dancehall culture in Melbourne, and is headed by Cat Pwiti – founder of Melbourne’s first Dancehall dance crew ‘Burncity Queenz’ and director of student group Jungle City dancers. ‘Kitty Cat’ is the first Australian dancer in history to enter the ‘International Dancehall Queen’ competition in Jamaica and has dedicated her love of dance to the style and culture of Dancehall.

Featured performers: The Jungle City Bashment Live Show will showcase JUNGLE CITY DANCERS who were featured in a viral youtube advertisement created by MINI Cooper early this year, and BURNCITY QUEENZ who have been a household name in Melbourne’s Dancehall scene for over five years. The show will also feature some of Australia’s top dancers such as NADIAH NFUZION – featured in in the top 20 of 2014’s season of So You Think You Can Dance; and an array of Melbourne based Dancehall artists such as DI APPRENTICE; SK SIMEON; and YAW MULATTO  as well as selectors ZARE DEMUS and SISTA ITATIONS who will transform the Jungle City stage show into a proper bashment party that will continue into the night.

Jungle City Bashment will take place on Sunday 21st December 2014, at Howler 7-11 Dawson St, Brunswick. Doors open at 7:00pm and the show kicks off at 7:30pm – 9:00pm, followed by the Bashment party which will continue until 1:00am. Dress to Impress in your wildest Dancehall attire, and book your tickets early through Moshtix, to avoid missing out on Melbourne’s Bashment of the year!!
